Imran Khan Urges ‘Policy Shift’ in Letter to COAS Munir

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has written a letter to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir, urging a shift in national policies, his lawyer Faisal Chaudhry revealed on Monday.

Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where Khan is currently imprisoned, Chaudhry stated, “As a former prime minister and party leader, Imran Khan has sent a six-point letter to the army chief.”

The former premier, who was ousted through a parliamentary vote in 2022, expressed solidarity with the military in its fight against terrorism and acknowledged the sacrifices made by soldiers, according to Chaudhry. Khan emphasized the importance of national unity in supporting the armed forces.

Key Points of the Letter

  1. Election Fraud & Political Landscape
    • Khan raised concerns over alleged fraudulent elections and the promotion of money launderers within the political system.
  1. Judicial Independence
    • He criticized the 26th Constitutional Amendment, claiming it undermines judicial independence and the rule of law.
    • He also referenced the Al-Qadir Trust case verdict.
  1. Censorship & Free Speech
    • The letter condemned the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), arguing that it has been used as a tool to suppress dissent and silence social media voices.
  1. Crackdown on PTI & Press Freedom
    • Khan highlighted cases of terrorism charges, raids, and the use of force against PTI workers.
    • He also warned that threats against journalists were damaging the reputation of the armed forces.
  1. Intelligence Operations
    • The letter addressed concerns regarding the activities of intelligence agencies and their influence on political affairs.
  1. Economic Concerns
    • Khan accused the current government of weakening the economy by artificially controlling the rupee’s value.
    • He also pointed to low investment levels and internet shutdowns as significant economic hurdles.

Call for a Judicial Commission

Khan urged the army chief to reconsider existing policies and called for the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate key national issues.

The letter follows a meeting between PTI leaders—Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan—with General Munir. The discussions reportedly focused on the overall security situation in the country.

PTI’s Stance & Recent Developments

This letter gains significance as PTI recently ended negotiations with the PML-N-led government, where the party had demanded:

  • The formation of judicial commissions to investigate incidents from May 9, 2023, and November 24-27, 2023.
  • The release of all political prisoners, including Khan himself.

Military’s Response

In December 2024, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry commented on alleged backdoor talks between PTI and the establishment.

He stated, “All political parties and leaders are respectable to us. No individual, their politics, or their desire for power is above Pakistan’s interests.”

Khan’s letter now adds further weight to the ongoing political discourse, urging a reassessment of national policies and governance strategies.
